Black Sally Chironomid
May 8, 2009 by rsfat · Leave a Comment
Throughout the season chironomids are the single most important food source for trout in productive stillwaters. Chironomid pupa make up to 50% of the trout’s diet during the spring season. With over 2500 species in western North America chironomids offer a rich, readily available food source. Although the heaviest hatches occur in the months immediately following ice off and turn over chironomids are an all season food source that trout become accustomed to seeing and feeding upon. Like a bowl of potato chips or other snack at a party it seems that trout just can’t resist chironomid pupa. It takes a number of pupae to make up a meal, so our odds of catching a trout increase accordingly. I have seen selective pupa feeding of epic proportions. Trout become so stuffed it seems inconceivable they could swallow anymore. The Black Sally is a tried and true early season producer of fish. Give it a try and hold on tight to your rod.

Check your regs folks most rivers are now closed until July the 1st. Some rivers are still open though like the Capilano, which has started to see some early Coho. The Vedder is still open for fly only, no weights or strike indicators on the line, below the Vedder crossing bridge. The vedder has been fishing well on the fly for the steelhead, try using black and blue combos.
Sturgeon Are On! Fraser River May 09

Plenty of Sturgeon are being caught right now especially in the lower part of the river, Albion and down, on eulachons. The eulachons are running in and the sturgeon are feeding well on them, several fish in the 7ft range are being caught with the occasional 8ft in the mix. The freshet has also started so remember to keep an eye out for debris. Dew worms and Lamprey have been working as well, we are well stocked with all the bait that you need so come on by. Just a note, the Fraser doesn’t open for Springs until June 15th, but fish are already moving through.
Nice weather brings up the trout May 09

Thanks to the latest bout of warm weather our local lakes have been fishing well. Chironomids have been coming off in good hatches on warm days and even some nice mayfly’s are starting to come off. Lafarge has just been stocked once again on April 27th with 1500 rainbows, so the fishing there will be easy. If you want to try some where new try Rolley lake as it was stocked with just as many fish as Lafarge but a lot less people usually. All the local lakes have been stocked by now at least once and the waters are warming up nicely. Trout fishing at any of the lower mainland lakes has been doing really well so get out there and work those winter kinks out of your lines.

A lot of the interior lakes are starting to come off now. Here’s what’s open so far,Nicola , Barnes, Roche, Stump, Morgan, White Lake, Stoney, Mini, 6 Mile, Sawmill, Jacko, Echo, Tunkwa, and if you know of any others let us know and we’ll pass it on. Try using leeches, chironomids and dragons on sinking lines to start with as dthe fish will be slowly moving out of the depths to feed. We will update this post as we hear of new lakes coming off, so stay tuned..
Saltwater Heating up for May 09

The Local salt has been fishing really well the last two weeks. Off the south west side of Bowen between Tunstel Bay and the hump has been producing well with fish from 12-30 lbs. 5 1/4 inch anchovies or medium sized herring behind a flasher between 70 -130 ft deep has been producing alot of the fish. For spoons try size 4 flaming hans or a Hot green glo tiger. If the wind gets to be too much try fishing off the mouth of the capilano as there are coho moving in to the river now.
