Garry and the rest of the staff at Riverside would like to thank everyone who turned up for our 5th annual Sturgeon Derby.  The derby went really well even if the Sturgeon did end up being a little tight lipped.  This year was probably the biggest increase in competitors we have seen in our short history.  Last year there was 68 rods entered and about 20 boats in the derby and this year it swelled to 121 rods entered and 38 boats registered.  First place was taken with a 88 inch (7′4″) Sturgeon by Mike Cox, netting him $2300.00.  Second place was taken by Ted Merrilatt with a 84 3/4″ fish, and for that he took home a Shimano Tyrnos 20.  Wade Gienow managed to land the most fish in the derby by measuring in over 280 inches of fish, and for that his boat took home $590.00.  We are already planning for next years event and look forward to seeing you all again.  We would also like to thank all our sponsors who donated prizes for the event.  Mike Mitchell  and BC Outdoors for their donation of a beautiful limited edition BC Outdoors  9 foot 6 weight fly rod, and for all Mikes help being a Marshall  at the derby.  Amundson Outdoor for the generous donation of 2 of their 8 foot Sturgeon rods.  Kufa for their donation of a Sturgeon Stik.  Redl Sports for their donation of a Trophy XL Wading Jacket.  Superfly for their donation of a Superfly deluxe fly vest and Seapro Distribution for the Quantum Big  Cat.

Nov 09 Coho Fishing Picking Up

November 9, 2009 by rsfat · Leave a Comment

Well it looks like the Harrison and Chehalis systems are finally getting more fish.  The waters on the north side of the Fraser typically fish much better in the month of November than in October.  A lot of them fish quite well into  December and even January.  Coho are suckers for spinners and spoons.  Anything from Colorados to Blue Fox spinners and even Hildebrandts and Dick Nites will take Coho.  Silver, gold and copper are all key.  Chartreuse is a great colour in any lure whether it’s a fly or spinner.  Don’t forget Coho like slow slack water so look for them in slow runs and seams as well as hiding in log jams and behind boulders.  Good luck and tight lines.

Local Lakes Fishing Well Nov 09

Well winter is almost here and the fall stocking program is almost done.  Lafarge Lake, Rice, Mill, Rolley and Green Timbers Lake were all stocked at the end of October with both catchable size rainbows and a few hundred nice 1-2lb trout as well.  Rolley Lake is now closed for winter , you can walk in but it’s a long way to pack all your gear.  Lafarge is still fishing well and so is Mill Lake in Abbotsford.  Rice Lake and Green Timbers have been fairly quiet though.  So if and when that sun does shine through I’d hit one of the local lakes just for some fun.  We  stay stocked on most trout flies through winter so stop by on your way and we’ll fill you in on the latest fly that’s working.

Interior Lakes Starting to Freeze Nov 09

November 9, 2009 by rsfat · Leave a Comment

Well it’s that time of year again and a lot of the lakes are starting to or are already icing over.  The Merritt area has been fishing really well for those few die hards who are willing to deal with icy mornings and foul weather.  Just make sure to check your elevation before going as anything over 1500 meters is pretty well iced over now, with a few exceptions.  Low lying lakes and warm south winds may keep some lakes open for another week or so, especially if you don’t mind doing a little ice breaking first thing in the morning.  For those brave enough the reward has been many nice fish and very few if any fisherman.  Tight lines and time to start sharpening those auger blades.

Sturgeon Fishing on the Fraser Nov 09

November 9, 2009 by rsfat · Leave a Comment

Well it’s November already and the Sturgeon are still eating well.  For the Sturgeon try using stink bait or fresh roe.  Eulachons will also still work well.  The fishing has been slow at times due to the abundance of food out there, but lots of fish will still be feeding.  Coho will still fish well for a couple more weeks, try targeting them with spoons at creek  mouths and in the back channels.  If you need any tips or hints of where to go stop on by and we’ll help you out.
