Price of Licences Going UP
April 27, 2010 by rsfat · Leave a Comment
For those of you who hunt and fish I recommend buying your licence before July 1st 2010. As of July 1st the HST will be in and you will be paying 7% more on all licences and tags than you do now. That could save you $2.52 on a fishing licence and $2.25 on your hunting licence. It will also save you $1.05 on each of your tags or more, which can add up quickly. So get in and get your licence now before you have to pay more.
Get your Pleasure Craft Operator Card Now!!
April 27, 2010 by rsfat · Leave a Comment
We have just heard from a reliable source that if you don’t have your Pleasure Craft Operator Card by the end of May you are going to have to get it renewed every five years. Right now if you get your licence it is good forever. Well our good old government has decided thats not in their financial interest. So starting in June if you get your licence it will expire in 5 years and there will be a cost to renew, if you have it already you will be grand fathered. They will also be making the test much harder with twice as many questions. I spoke with a marine captain who had an oppurtunity to see the new test and he said that ” you’ll definitely have to take the book home and study”. So if you don’t have your licence get it done asap. One way is to take it online at www.boaterexam.com or give the guys at Red Hawk Survival a call- #604-476-9568.

Fraser River April 2010

For the sturgeon anglers out there, know that the Eulachon run is officially on its way. The eulachons will be the main food source for the sturgeon all throughout the Spring and into early Summer. Currently most sturgeon are concentrated in the non-tidal portion, however as we get deeper into Spring and the eulachon run peaks, the sturgeon will be much more evenly disperced.
Cutthroat fishing for April should be just as productive as March if not better! The fry are still hatching heavily and consistantly so fry fly patterns and small silver or gold spoons are still the best “go-to” bets. Other mentionable flies would again be Olive Chrystal Buggers, Carey Specials, and various leechs. Note that cutthroat are very migratory fish and are constantly on the move. They will often give themselves away by breaking the surface of the water in persuit of minnow schools. So if your not getting into fish within a dozen casts and you don’t see any signs of fish, you might want to move to a new spot. Anyways, goodluck and go hunt for some cutties.

Local Rivers April 2010
April 3, 2010 by rsfat · Leave a Comment
Most of the local rivers are fishing well for steelhead and cutthroat throughout the lower mainland. The Salmon fry will continue to hatch and move during the next few weeks which gives fly fisherman great opportunities. Fish are being pulled out from all of the main river systems such as the Vedder and the Stave River where fish can be found moving all throughout according to water conditions and daylight. Standard lures such as blades and plastic worms will produce, as well as baits; roe, Jensen eggs, and dew worms. Also to note, the smaller rivers will continue to have steady numbers all through spring unlike some of the larger systems which seem to taper off.

Well we going to try to keep you updated with all the ice that is coming off. So far, Barnes, Canim, Morgan, White, Stump, Six mile, Jacko, and most of the Douglas Ranch lakes are open. For those still ice fishing, shrimp through the ice seems to be producing the best results. Time to check your supplies, leaders, tippets and indicators because come the end of the month we will be fishing everywhere! Chronomids, Leeches and dragons are going to be key along with a good density compensated sink line or tip to get to those fish just coming up to feed after a long winter. So come on by and see what’s new and let us show you some new gear for this season.
Don’t forget licences need to be renewed now as they all expired Mar 31st, 2010.
Winter Feeders and Crab April 2010
April 1, 2010 by rsfat · Leave a Comment
Winter spring fishing has been good lately. In the last week three fish in the 20 pound class were reported. The fish have been spread out evenly around, the mouth of the Capilanoadgb,Tungstel bay and Defence Island have been producing the bulk of the fish. Bait has been the number one producer, spoons and hoochies have been fairly effective as well.
Take note that When targeting winter feeder fish make sure to fish deep just off the bottom. Anchovies and small Herring fished in teaser heads behind a flasher, hoochies, and spoons in various colours are all productive.
The crabbing in and around Belcarra and Reed Point is still great, so if your headed out don’t forget the traps. Nothing beats a crab feed, unless you get a nice salmon to go with it!
Don’t forget to get your new licence! www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish/Licensing
