TUNKWA FISHING REPORT July 8, 2010

July 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Fly fishers experienced some good success late last week, keying in on emerging mayflies. Fishing ‘Hare’s Ear ‘nymphs, ‘Half-Backs’, ‘Prince Nymph’s, and our local pattern, the ‘Orange Sucka’ around emerging mayflies, were all working well. The nymphs had to be fished just subsurface off the bigger weed beds in Tunkwa. We are also seeing some sporadic hatches of ‘travelling sedges’ coming off Tunkwa. When the rainbows are crushing the ‘travellers’ on top, it can be some exciting action. Sedge Pupa or olive ‘K-Mart Special’ patterns are great patterns to use for these fish, hits are violent, often resulting in break off’s…a step-up in stronger tippet is highly recommended. Blonde coloured or light olive coloured damsel nymph patterns, fished deeper, again out off the weed beds, have been accounting for trout as well. Trolling or wind drifting, black/ red or maroon micro leaches have been working for some guests as well. Chironomid fishing has been a bit slow, but being at the right place, at the right time, fish are being caught with this approach. Guests fishing worms under ‘slip-floats’ have been having the best success, landing good numbers of fish and some big ones as well. Not many reports from anglers trolling hardware, but this tactic is normally a producer anytime on Tunkwa. Guest day tripping out to area lakes, are reporting good catches and some big fish, and being able to be on the lakes where the Sedge hatches are coming off strong, is worth the effort.
The unusual weather patterns so far this season, definitely have the bug hatches way off. Some knowledgeable Tunkwa anglers estimating it as much as three weeks behind! Fortunately, the weather forecast is finally calling for some summer like temperatures, with the warmer temperatures, we should see local bug hatches pick up and fishing be much more consistent as we continue this summer.

Interior Lakes Fishing July 2010

July 4, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Fly fishers have had a tough time with sporadic bug hatches making  it tough to dial into what the rainbows want. Lots of big trout are still being seen active on the surface, taunting anglers. Later in the past week with the warmer weather some guys are having good success in the mornings, fishing TomThumbs(dries) across fish that were rising for Caddis that are hatching……this is fly fishing at its finest!

Fishing the good old worm under a slip float are still doing very well, limiting out on rainbows in short order, if they are set up in the right areas, worm fishing is deadly, even with finicky trout, seems they just can’t resist a lively worm.
Trollers are still catching fish, with the usual presentations,……gang trolls or wedding bands tipped with worms, and HotShots or Kwikfish plugs, are making the trout react and strike out at them, it’s just a matter of figuring out the right area, and correct depth. Trolling quicker seems to be more productive, than a slow troll, right now.
Surface water temp is hitting 66°F mid day. Water levels are high, clarity is still very good, and the algae blooms are very light.

Fraser Chinook Scheduled to Open July 2010

July 4, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The Fraser  Chinook fishery is to open on July 16 2010 with a size restriction in place of 1 fish under 77cm until July 29th.   Then you can retain 4 chinook per day but only 1 over 62cm (24 1/4 inches).  With 10-20 fish per day being caught in the Albion Test sets this shows there are lots of fish beginning to migrate up the Fraser, which also means opening weekend should be excellent fishing.   Sturgeon fishing is still going strong on the Fraser.  They are still actively feeding on Eulachons and dew worms.  The average day out there right now is between 5-10 fish, and as more Springs start in to the river the fishing is only going to get better.

Local Salt Heating up July 2010

July 4, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The action has slowed right down at Thrasher Rock, but things have picked up elsewhere.  Pt. Grey, and Spanish banks have been producing fair numbers of fish. The Cap mouth has produced good numbers of Coho up to 8 lbs on small Apex, white hoochies, Coho killers and small Herring.

The Bowen Island fishery has continued to provide some action through last week. Anglers fishing in Seymour Bay and Hole in the Wall have been finding some nice fish, so there are definitely still some local options.  In addition, Salmon Rock has started to produce a few fish, and this area has the potential to be quite good in the coming weeks.

There is lots of bait in the area, so the fish should continue to feed and hold for a while longer.  The fish are still mainly eating 5 to 6″ herring, but some have been caught with  ”young-of-the year” herring in their bellies.  This will mean that smaller spoons could potentially become the most effective lure if they completely switch to this rich food source.  Over the past weekend a small 1.25″ Flamin’ Hans Gypsy spoon, has worked well and it did as well or better than most  5″ spoons and full sized hootchies.

Local Rivers Open July 2010

July 4, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

All our local rivers are open once again.  Some of the rivers are still flowing high and dirty but they should be settling down in the next week.  If you find a river that you want to fish is high and dirty try fishing the upper reaches as there won’t be as much sediment, and that’s where you will find the fish.  Rivers like the Alouette and Pitt River have been fishing well for cutthroat and rainbows up to 18 inches.  Try using silver and gold spinners and for the fly go with minnow or stickleback patterns as well as some caddis or mayfly nymphs.  The Vedder River is dirty down low and flowing pretty fast, but the farther up you go the lower and clearer the water is.  We’ve received 2 reports of early reds being caught up around Tamihi, so get out there.  For those of you who like Coho, the Capilano has been dropping due to lack of rain, so the upper river will be the best bet as more fish will hold in those deep canyon pools.  Casting spoons and spinners has been doing fairly well at Ambleside as fish are holding at the mouth waiting for higher water as well.

Trout Fishing Locally July 2010

Summer is here! School is out, time to grab your rods and hit the water.  All our local lakes were just heavily stocked in the last 2 weeks of June. With thousands of new fish in our local lakes and the cool temps fishing has been really good.   Dick nites and Hildebrandts have been the spoons of choice on the local lakes.  For the fly guys try using micro leeches and half backs as well as bull dogs and pumpkin heads.  As it heats up try going deeper to find the fish.
